Cracked Roof Rafter

In an attic above a garage, I observed a cracked roof rafter.  Look closely at the photo and you will notice that the crack goes completely through the rafter.  This can cause the roof to sag if walked on or from a heavy snow load.  The good thing is that I was able to explain to the home owners contractor how to repair the rafter.  The home owner was very thankful that an engineer did not have to be brought in, which can be expensive.  This is one of those instances that when you have a strong construction/contracting background you can help your clients.  It's the contractors that do the actual work, not the engineers. copyrighted@2008
